The GayVN Awards: San Francisco

San Francisco Glory!

The GAYVNs this year belonged to Michael Lucas and Lucas Entertainment for “La Dolce Vita.” I have not seen the movie except for the trailers at the show, but after winning more awards than any other movie in GAYVN history, it is on my short list to watch.

I did not take home Best Sex Scene. I lost to Brad Patton and Brian Hansen for their performance in “Manly Heat: Quenched.” It only makes sense since the two seem to be very much in love (or at least very hot for each other) and that is the kind of energy one needs to create an award winning anything.

My personal highlights were of course the always entertaining Kathy Griffin and seeing François Sagat take the award back to France for Performer of the Year. Watching Kathy throughout the evening proved to me that her role was much more than to MC the show. She took a hold of that room by the shorthairs and never let go. Her impressive impromptu and witty, razor sharp humor only solidified my respect for her as an artist.

Probably the best part of the show happened while my buddy Tyler Riggs was presenting the award I was up for. The audience cheered him to take off his shirt. He took it partly off and explained that he didn’t want to take off the cufflinks. Of course, Tyler LOVES an audience and soon submitted. He then realized that he was stuck; he could not pull his wrists through with the cuffs secured. Kathy saw the opportunity and jumped out on the stage in a sort of cougar-like crouch. She then approached Tyler and got down on her knees in front of him, giving him the diversion he needed to free himself. It was so impressive. That is why she is so good at what she does. She was worth every penny.

It was pissing down after the awards and as BW and I walked back to Kevin’s to dry off and change for the next event we commented on how great the evening was with Kathy. It could have been better and it could have been much worse. Losing the intermission was the best byproduct of the massive technical problems they had at the beginning.

I must say having BW around this weekend at all the parties was most helpful and enjoyable. His presence provided a guarantee of some fun with somebody amidst the crowd of new faces. I tend to become rather unsocial at events like this. BW also knows a lot of the same people I do and a lot of people I should. He likes to “steer” me in the right direction.

The after party was thrown by Naked Sword at a venue aptly called “The Porn Palace.” I got to see some good people and was able to meet some of our distributors and make some friends and allies in the world of Internet Porn. It was a good party, but we slipped out once the Tequila started to overflow from the plastic shot glasses held by the drunken hoard.

We met up with Kevin and some of his friends at my favorite bar Moby’s. What a dramatic shift! With that group we could relax and enjoy ourselves. The hours flew by and before we knew it we were gobbling down delicious pizza and laughing our asses off. It was a fucking great weekend.

Awards… I’ve Had A Few

Posted by Johnny on Saturday, February 10th, 2007

It’s that time again. No not tax time, you do not need me to remind you of that, it’s GAYVN award season. Usually the GAYVNs are held in West Hollywood at Rage Nightclub. This year it will be held at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco with all the fanfare it deserves. HELL YEAH! Not only will it be in my most favorite west coast city, but Boy Wonder will be there and we are lucky enough to have the fabulous Kathy Griffin as our award hostess.

This may be a bit of a drag for some of the West Hollywood set since the ceremony draws in some of the hottest Porn Stars from all over the globe. To fill that void, enter the first annual WeHo XXX Awards; a viewer’s choice type of awards show. The votes were cast by fans online and the awards were given out last Wednesday at Micky’s, another popular watering hole in the hood.

Although I went home emptied handed, I had an absolute blast seeing friends old and new and drinking Sapphire tonics. Yummy!

I have no idea who this was but I loved her make-up.

Just Kidding! It's Chi Chi, who won best director!

I absolutely love seeing Tyler… I should know by now to bring a step stool when taking pictures with him.

You have seen these two misfits before. These are two of my best and oldest friends Mike and Mitch. They were kind enough to show up and hang out with me to buffer the madness.

New Horizons?

Posted by Johnny on Saturday, November 25th, 2006

I am in LA now working on two videos, one for Rascal called “When Bears Attack” and one for All Worlds called “Depraved.” I have some really great partners - this is the really fun part of my job.

Recently I was invited to read for a part in a new TV show. It’s a spin off of the show “Dante’s Cove” called “Dante’s Lair.” It has the same gay theme as DC, but with much more GAY! It is clearly made to cater to the males and also contains a bit of nudity. Go figure.

The audition was on Tuesday in a swanky penthouse in Westwood. I walked out of the elevator into a marble hallway that led to huge black doors. Inside was a waiting room with a TV show projected on the far wall. It was a classic audition scene; people sitting around reading scripts while clutching thier head shots. Some looked at me with a warm look that seemed to say, “Welcome to the cattle call, good luck!” I received my script from the receptionist and glanced at my lines on the leather sofa. As I reached the second page I was interrupted by a really tall guy offering his hand almost to my face.

“I have seen you around a lot, good to see you, good luck in there” he said. He looked like me, dark featured and sort of ethnic; I knew he had just read for the same part as me. That made me feel good and more at ease. I soon met the casting agent who was accompanied by a PA who offered me a glass of water. When he returned he said “I am such a big fan of your work, good luck, I think you will do great!” I must say it felt pretty good to be acknowledged in front of people in that situation. I felt like a peacock showing his feathers. My last interruption was from the Director of Operations on her way out to a meeting. She put her call on hold, held out her hand and said “So good to meet you, I hope this works out for us” and scurried off. It was getting a little “Outer Limits” for me, but it sure felt better that I had been invited instead of showing up for an open casting call.

When my turn came I found myself standing in front of the agent, director, and one of the producers. I was so nervous that I began to smell. I do not wear deodorant usually and my body temperature had risen so high at this moment that I wish I had. I read my lines and then had to pee, in the worst way. It was very cold in there and it made me so jumpy that my voice cracked on several occasions. They said the infamous line “We’ll call you” and I was on my way.

Right as I got to the lobby my phone rang. It was the casting agent wanting me come back upstairs and read for another part. I had a bit more confidence knowing that I didn’t have to memorize the lines this time, just read them from the page. For some bizarre reason I felt as if I had to memorize them out of habit, after all I have never done a “cold read” before. This time it flowed, I knew now what they were looking for based on reading the prior script and felt much more comfortable with this character. Apparently they felt the same because they were very pleased with this performance. The director clapped his hands and cooed with delight when I finished. Always a good way to end an audition.

Later on I met BW and our gal pal Michelle at a bar called The Falcon in Hollywood. They had just come from a screening of “For Your Consideration” and wanted to take advantage of our mutual availability. I rarely get to see Michelle due to familial obligations and schedule conflicts so it was good to have both BW and Michelle under the same roof in a social setting. Michelle has always been and continues to be a bit of social hub of West Hollywood. Before I lived in CA and was out here from Boston we would go out and she would swing from clique to clique doing the rounds “Hello how are ya, hello how are ya” It was a great evening and a good way to begin my time here in lovely LA LA Land.

Fashion Week 2006

Posted by Johnny on Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

The Hotel Bryant is on 44th between 6th and 7th; right near Times Square and directly across from Bryant Park where Fashion Week 2006 was held. Being right at the heart of the action the energy of the event pulsed through me. From my room I watched as name after name came out the back of the tent to their waiting cars to hit the next show. The gate was crowded with photographers waiting to snap a shot and fans lined up to get their pictures taken with the celebs. It was more than electric, it was intoxicating. As an aspiring designer it was all I could do to contain myself. I know it’s naïve to imagine being discovered by Marc Jacobs, but believe me the fantasies were swimming in my head. I had my traveling partner and very good friend Saya take the reigns and shoot this little clip as soon as we got there.

The Fitting

I had my fitting at the Empire State Building. I planned an all-original ensemble consiting of a shirt I made, pants I Hazzardized and toting a bag that Saya had made. As soon as I entered the room a small camera crew walked up to me and asked if they could get a few words about the show. They were from MTV and were covering the Heatherette show. I was caught totally of guard, but naturally obliged. The fitting lasted all of ten minutes.

Georgi

They took the shirt in at a couple places around the shoulder, threw some last minute accessories on me like these sunglasses and the item that pulled it all together, the empty Vodka bottle. It boasted the name Georgi. When I took a whiff to experience its bouquet I was met with a most unpleasant aroma that I will not soon forget.

After everything had been placed, they took a Polaroid and clapped their hands in delight. As I got undressed and dressed again I took great care in putting my pants on very slowly and removing my shirt to showcase the designs. They had not noticed the hand embroidery on the jeans or the tribal design down the sleeve of the shirt or the bag. They did however notice my socks. I own not a single pair of white socks; they are all tie dyed. The assistant asked if they were Heatherette socks.

“No, I made ‘em.”

“You have a little Heatherette in you” he said.

That was good enough. I left for dinner in Chelsea planning on introducing the line of socks along with my T shirts.

Georgi

The day of the show I did not eat anything aside from some yogurt in the morning. I was a little nervous at what could happen and what would happen. Backstage was nothing short of semi-organized chaos. Models were late and Richie was on roller skates; I suppose that helped. He slowed down enough for us to get a quick photo. He photographs really well.

They allowed photographers backstage. I suppose with people like Paris and Nicky, Mya and Mena Suvari it made sense. The space was tiny and people were everywhere asking questions for their show or taking pictures for their magazines and websites. It made for a very crowded backstage. Mena was one outfit over from me and Paris and I had our make-up done next to one another. I was really surprised that they were both a bit shorter than me! It was a little surreal to see Mena; I admired her performance in season 5 of Six Feet Under so much. Mya stood behind me in queue for the line up. Paris remained untouchable as she was escorted from her first walk to the next outfit change.

During the line up I was told I had a partner to walk down with. This concerned me because I had not been informed before or been told how to walk down with him. On a runway you are to walk down, do your look and pass the oncoming model on the right. Well. The runway was lined with flailing dancers on either side and Paris and Nicky were walking before us, side by side. I had no idea how to do this. Should we separate and walk up side by side? Should we walk up one in front of the other? My partner had no clue either and no one seemed to care very much about the order - so why should we? I suppose it went well. Nobody fell and the pictures came out great.

On The Runway

Clothes!

I enjoy doing the runway; everything about it to me is exciting. It’s different and my clothes get to stay on eliminating the worry of looking bloated or being cold - you guys know exactly what I’m talking about! I went to the hotel right after the show skipping the after party. I was so tired and did not feel like being around any more crowds or cameras. It was a great couple of days and I was glad I was there. My only regret is that I didn”t get to keep anything.

Johnny has a love hate relationship with the video clips I shoot of him. He hates having me all up in his grill being as obnoxious as possible with the camera, but he loves the posts that pop up featuring him as though he were doing something here on the site instead of relaxing on a pool deck on The Cape. Bastard!

I had to cut a little chunk out of the middle of this clip because I foolishly used the full name of one of our readers. That would never do! Watch as Johnny’s annoyance mounts towards the end.
