Hazzardous Materials Guide

Phoenix Pride

Posted by Johnny

Saturday was a long day. Our call time was 8 AM. We were paraded around waving to fans that gathered on the streets of downtown Phoenix. I would be lying if I said that it wasn’t exciting and flattering to have all these people screaming out my name. One girl was the light of my day. She came running over to the truck barefoot in this long tie-dyed skirt, jumped on the tailgate and exclaimed that she was so excited to see me and had to have a picture with me! How could I resist? The girl actually boarded a moving vehicle for a photo op!

After the parade we were whisked over to the festival where it looked like a country fair with gay people. I love a fair, it brings out the Midwestern boy in me. Unfortunately, I was not able to really experience the fair at all. Two solid hours of signing autographs was a bit taxing, the last thing I wanted to do was to walk around in the hot sun and fight a crowd. Plus we had to be where Chi Chi was spinning to make an appearance and pass out some gift bags. Open bar was very helpful by that point. We were getting tired and the idea of the public and being “on” was slightly overwhelming. Is there anything a good Gin and Tonic can’t cure?

At 9 PM we headed back to the hotel to get changed and prepare for a 10:30 pick up to the club where were dancing. This space ROCKED! It was very reminiscent of Space in Miami. It was an old ice house. Everything was stone with high walls and open ceilings. So cool! However, the music was not so good and became worse when Luca and I got on stage. We couldn’t hear it! For some inexplicable reason the speakers were not carrying up to the stage and left us searching for a beat. Luckily I was able to make out some of the lyrics of the song that was playing. It was Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson and since I have heard this song a couple thousand times and like it, I knew where the beats and the “umph” parts were and performed accordingly. There was a smaller room that had Chris Cox formerly of Thunderpuss spinning. You really can’t go wrong. It was a welcome change from what was being played outside. I really think they had someone’s iPod hooked up somewhere, pressed shuffle and called it a set. I closed the place at 4 AM and crawled back to my hotel room to wash off the evening and catch up on some rest.

We have a flight in 2 hours back to LA, tomorrow Milo and I are driving to San Francisco to see Kevin and François. Now that is something to look forward to! Oh, and I just made my entry for Friday so you’ll have to scroll down to read that. More to come tomorrow!
